Shortly after launching my newsletter, Michael Katz of Blue Penguin Development became one of my mentors. He recorded his newsletters, which at first seemed a little over the top to me. One day, I reached out and asked him about it. He kindly replied and gave me advice to start recording my own. It still took me another year to step out and try it.

At first, I thought recording would be too time-consuming, and I wondered if it would make a difference. What I discovered was that it added great value. After just a few editions, I started getting positive feedback from subscribers who loved being able to listen on the go. My open rates went up by at least 10 percent, and it became easier for new readers to connect with my content.

If you’re thinking about adding an audio version to your own newsletter, here are some benefits you might find:

1. Authentic Voice
When you read your newsletter out loud, you can hear whether it really sounds like you. Recording makes sure your tone feels natural and conversational, which helps your audience connect with you on a deeper level.

2. Cleaner Content
Reading aloud helps you catch errors your eyes might gloss over. When you listen to yourself, little grammar slips, awkward phrases, or missing words stand out more clearly. Recording your newsletter gives you a built-in way to tighten up your writing, so your readers get a smoother, more polished experience.

3. Accessibility
Not everyone has the time or desire to read an email start to finish. Adding audio gives your subscribers more options. It makes your newsletter accessible to people who learn better by listening, those who are visually impaired, or those who simply prefer audio.

4. More Website Traffic
When you embed the audio on your website and link to it from your newsletter, it encourages readers to click through. This brings more organic traffic to your site and helps position it as the place to find your content.

5. More Content Opportunities
Audio recordings can easily be repurposed. Over time, you could build a library of content that might evolve into a podcast or become part of a resource library. It’s a simple way to stretch the value of each newsletter you create.

6. Stronger Connection with Readers
Hearing your voice conveys warmth, tone, and personality that words on a page don’t fully capture. Subscribers can feel like they’re having a personal conversation with you, which builds loyalty and trust.

7. Convenience for Busy Schedules
Just like audiobooks, an audio newsletter gives your readers flexibility. They can listen while commuting, exercising, cooking, or doing errands. You meet them where they are, which makes your message easier to fit into their day.

A Small Change with a Big Impact

Adding audio to your newsletter doesn’t have to be complicated, but it can make a lasting difference. It creates new ways for your audience to connect with you, expands your reach, and strengthens your brand.

If you’ve been thinking about trying audio, consider this your encouragement to start. A small step could have a big impact on the way your audience engages with you.
